Carpet Par Rating

Par rating is somewhat of a mystery but i included here because i get questions on it.

I firmly believe it s very important for homeowners to have complete access to all the carpet specifications. Most internet sources say it is a rating created by the carpet manufacturer shaw. The carpet padding also effects room temperature and some may say that the padding under the carpet does just as much or more insulating than the actual carpet itself. For example carpet with a 4 0 tarr will retain its original new texture appearance longer in various traffic conditions than carpet with a 3 0 rating.

I contacted mohawk the only carpets i have seen use a par rating and they were able to give. It is based on a 1 to 5 scale. Many carpet manufacturers have a durability scale they use to inform consumers. Winding the fiber around itself strengthens the resistance to crushing.

They might think the customer should select their new carpet based on price color and perhaps a durability rating like shaw s par rating system. I reached out to shaw and they stated par is not a rating they use. After vigorous industry standard wear simulating 20 000 foot traffic the worn carpet is compared to an unworn piece to determine how the piece has changed. While i m sure they go through a lot of trouble and expense to provide this rating system i personally think it falls short of being a trustworthy gauge for consumers.

The r value rating is anywhere from 1 05 to 2 15 dependent upon the thickness of the pad. It is usually based on a number from one to five with five being the most durable.
